Women's football faced many struggles through out its fight for right. Although the women's football had its first golden age in the UK in early 1920s when at least 5,000 spectators came to watch the women’s football, but this was stopped on 5 December 1921 when England's Football Association voted to ban the women’s football from grounds used by its member clubs. The ban on women’s football was cancelled in July 1971. Women's football was added to the official programme in 1996. The women's football tournament is contested between full national sides, with no age restrictions. The teams for the women’s football chosen from the best of the previous year's World Cup, with one spot reserved for the host country. The first women's football tournament was at the 1996 Atlanta Games. The US won the gold medal, and picked up silver in 2000 after an extra time defeat by Norway.
